From All Walks of Life: A Guitar Player

A quick glance on YouTube might describe some of the variety of people we have playing the guitar. Certainly in my playing lifetime I have never met two players who are alike any more than I have met two individuals who are alike. We have guitar players who are highly educated and trained, others who play by ear and still others who fall somewhere in between. Also we have a variety of styles and genres and then we have a variety of reasons why people play.

Some people love playing for the value of playing with others. This might be in a jam session or in a band. Sometimes it is with a neighbor and other times it was a chance encounter with another fellow instrumentalist. Others just simply like the creating aspect of playing the guitar for composition and still others love to learn their favorite song or instrumental. We have guitar students, we have life long players and we have some who are just starting out. Sometimes we see whole families who play and other times we see the individual who just likes picking up the instrument from time to time. There are as many varied reasons for who plays the guitar as well as why the guitar is played in the first place.

The other interesting thing about the instrument is that it is accessible to a variety of income levels. It is also portable and comes in many different price ranges. This is unlike the piano that usually starts off at a certain price range for example and also unlike other instruments that are often learned about in grade or high school. Getting a piano also requires overcoming the difficulty of having the piano shipped or moved. Then you have the difficulty of having enough room for the piano. The guitar on the other hand is extremely portable and is usually less expensive than the piano. This means that it is available to more walks of life and is fundamentally easier to obtain. There are many different guitars today hanging on the walls of guitar shops waiting to be bought. Why that guitar walks out the door is as individual as the person who bought the guitar.

There is a whole industry that tailors itself towards the guitar player. We have all sorts of accessories and all sorts of products designed to help the guitarist in their pursuits. For some people it is about style, others it is about quality and still others it is about convenience. Today we now have the internet as a resource to finding out all sorts of information to things we want to know about and this would include the guitar. Yet again, this is an example of the variety of the guitarists that we have today - the internet savvy and those that would rather be content without such a thing. Certainly the guitar player comes from all corners of life, in all kinds of genres and in all kinds of musical pursuits. It is one of the most common instruments that is played today to whatever purpose.
