Guitar - An Instrument With a Long Story

A guitar is a very versatile instrument with a long story behind it. The guitar has typically six strings, but some have four, seven, eight, ten, and even twelve strings. Regardless of the number of strings, it holds an interesting place among musical instruments.

The guitar has been around for a long time. It is estimated that stringed instruments that are similar to modern guitars have been a part of the music scene for 5,000 years. The oldest picture of an instrument that had the basic elements of a guitar was a Hittite stone carving that was carved 3300 years ago. The very ancient sitar that came from India is one of the ancestors of the guitar family.

Guitar

The English word "guitar" comes from the Spanish word "quitarra". Quitarra comes from the Latin word "cithara." Cithara comes from the Greek word "Kithara" which may have come from the Persian word, sihtar. This word bears a remarkable resemblance to the ancient Indian instrument, the sitar. These name progression shows the evolution of the instrument as well as the spread of the instrument across the ancient world.

The guitar normally has six strings, but there are versions with four, eight, ten, and even twelve strings. It is the primary instrument in blues music, country music, flamenco, rock, and pop music. There is also solo classic guitar music. The guitar is one of the most popular instruments for beginners. One of the reasons for this is that it is fairly easy to learn how to play it, at least at the early stages.

A luthier is a person who builds or repairs guitars. In Europe, during the development of the modern guitar, there were families of luthiers who passed their expertise down from generation to generation. One such family was the Vinaccia family of Naples, Italy. Although they are mostly known as the developers of the mandolin, they might also have made the very first six string guitar that has the characteristics of modern guitars.

Today, the electric guitar is quickly becoming the most popular guitar. An electric guitar may have a solid, semi-hollow, or hollow body. They also make very little sound without amplification. The electric guitar was first developed in 1936 by a man named George Beauchamp. A company named Danelectro is credited with making the electric guitar widely available to the public.

How To Get The Perfect Tone On Your Electric Guitar

Ever felt that your electric guitar is not giving you the tone you are looking for? There are various reasons as to why the tone may not be as awesome as you want it to be.

The determining factor in tone variation is the brand or model of the guitar. Different models produce unique tones-Gibson gives a deeper and fuller tone, while fender is more to the twangy side. Once the brand of the guitar is selected, then one has to get the best out of it.

Guitar

Guitarists often overlook the importance of the amplifiers. Amplifiers have two inputs- the high gain input and the low-gain inputs. Low gain inputs are sometimes neglected from plugging in. Once plugged in they might give you a much sweeter tone. So it goes with the output tube- selecting the right output tube will help you reach the perfect tone.

Re-tubing an amplifier can help in better maintenance and sound quality of the electric guitar. There are few items that a tube amp user needs to check regularly to keep the structure of the amplifier rattle free. Check that the speaker-mounts are sufficiently tight, remove faulty "filter caps" (only if needed; filter caps can last for years if properly cared for), and resistors should be replaced as necessary.

Play your frets well. Note that the tones and semitones are placed correctly. A tone is achieved by moving two frets up or down from the current position. A semitone on the other hand is played by moving one fret up or down from the present position.

Volume control is rarely thought by the guitarists as affecting the tone. As the volume control is turned down it has an adverse-effect on the equalization. To reduce the effect, place the equalizer pedal between the guitar and the distortion pedal or the guitar amp's built-in preamp. Adjust the equalizer setting and the distortion setting till the right tone is obtained.

The uniqueness of a guitar is its tonewood. Different woods give different tones. The tonewoods take different characteristics as per the model of the guitar, the parts it's used for and even vary with the maker of the guitar. Mahogany gives a low velocity sound compared to other top woods, Indian Rosewoods are known for the higher velocity it gives, while Alder is light wood which gives full rich tone.

Picks and pickup heights influence the tone more than it is credited for. The picks come in different gauge sizes and construction. The thicker a pick bigger is the gauge size. Thicker picks give a heavier tone while thin picks gives skinnier ones. The distance between the pickup and the string is known as the pickup height. Pickup heights are to be tried differently to get the optimum response from your guitar. Closer the pickup are to the string more will be the output volume, but usually an ear-piercing sound will be produced. While more the distance of pickup from string, lower output volume that is obtained. If these tips are too complex for you, check out some basic electric guitar tutorials to get a better sense of what I'm talking about.

Still is not satisfied about your guitar tone- then it must the effect pedals. Make sure those are arranged the right way to obtain the dream quality tone you need from your guitar.

From All Walks of Life: A Guitar Player

A quick glance on YouTube might describe some of the variety of people we have playing the guitar. Certainly in my playing lifetime I have never met two players who are alike any more than I have met two individuals who are alike. We have guitar players who are highly educated and trained, others who play by ear and still others who fall somewhere in between. Also we have a variety of styles and genres and then we have a variety of reasons why people play.

Some people love playing for the value of playing with others. This might be in a jam session or in a band. Sometimes it is with a neighbor and other times it was a chance encounter with another fellow instrumentalist. Others just simply like the creating aspect of playing the guitar for composition and still others love to learn their favorite song or instrumental. We have guitar students, we have life long players and we have some who are just starting out. Sometimes we see whole families who play and other times we see the individual who just likes picking up the instrument from time to time. There are as many varied reasons for who plays the guitar as well as why the guitar is played in the first place.

Guitar

The other interesting thing about the instrument is that it is accessible to a variety of income levels. It is also portable and comes in many different price ranges. This is unlike the piano that usually starts off at a certain price range for example and also unlike other instruments that are often learned about in grade or high school. Getting a piano also requires overcoming the difficulty of having the piano shipped or moved. Then you have the difficulty of having enough room for the piano. The guitar on the other hand is extremely portable and is usually less expensive than the piano. This means that it is available to more walks of life and is fundamentally easier to obtain. There are many different guitars today hanging on the walls of guitar shops waiting to be bought. Why that guitar walks out the door is as individual as the person who bought the guitar.

From All Walks of Life: A Guitar Player

There is a whole industry that tailors itself towards the guitar player. We have all sorts of accessories and all sorts of products designed to help the guitarist in their pursuits. For some people it is about style, others it is about quality and still others it is about convenience. Today we now have the internet as a resource to finding out all sorts of information to things we want to know about and this would include the guitar. Yet again, this is an example of the variety of the guitarists that we have today - the internet savvy and those that would rather be content without such a thing. Certainly the guitar player comes from all corners of life, in all kinds of genres and in all kinds of musical pursuits. It is one of the most common instruments that is played today to whatever purpose.

Care for the Acoustic Guitar

By far, the most important thing you can do to protect your
acoustic guitar is to control the humidity of its environment. Ask
any guitar repair person. They are the ones who see, time and time
again, the damage done to guitars and other fretted instruments by
humidity levels which are too low.

Most acoustic guitars are the happiest in a relative humidity (RH)
above 40%. In fact, most acoustic guitars are built in a relative
humidity range of 45%-50%. The greatest danger to your guitar
occurs during the fall, winter and early spring. In cold
temperatures you need to heat your home; and when you heat your
home, the air in your home becomes drier. It can often drop to less
than half of the RH of the factory in which your guitar was built!

Guitar

When the RH of your (and your guitar's) home descends to lower than
35%, all kinds of terrible things can happen. Cracks can occur in
the top, the bridge can lift from the top and the neck angle can
change. The warranties of most guitar manufacturers will exclude
guitars that have been stored in an inappropriate humidity. The
necessary repairs can be quite pricey.

The good news in all of this is that the solution is quite simple.
Store you guitar in a hardshell case and keep and maintain an
in-case humidifier. There are a number of different brands and
types of humidifiers on the market, in prices ranging from about
-. Check with your music dealer for the best one for you.
Don't forget to check and add water as often as necessary. If you
really want to keep on top of things, purchase a hygrometer (a
humidity meter). These can cost anywhere from to 0, but an
economy model will be accurate enough.

Another important factor in caring for your instrument is, don't
use strings that are too heavy (thick). Most manufactures suggest
that you use light gauge strings, not mediums. Some players balk at
this, but the fact is, volume and tone are often more a matter of
playing technique than of string gauge. If you have a vintage
guitar, you might want to consider extra-lights. Another route you
can go (which I do with most of my vintage instruments), is to use
"silk and steel" strings. I think these are just wonderful, for a
number of reasons: but one is, they put much less stress on your
guitar. Read my article, "Acoustic Guitar Strings--The Merits of
Silk & Steel" at:

http://ezinearticles.com/?id=518535

One other important caution regarding the care of your guitar: If
you use a capo, do not leave the capo on the instrument when you're
not playing it. The capo, when clamped on the neck, holds the
strings down on the fretboard and creates extra tension on the neck
and the top of the guitar. All acoustic guitars are destined, at
some point in time, to have problems due to the tension of the
strings. Why hasten the process by leaving a capo clamped on your
guitar?

Taking these steps to care for your acoustic guitar may seem a bit
burdensome, at first. But if you start applying these principles
now, your guitar will give you many years of playing pleasure.
